As the year 2024 approaches, various industries are already preparing themselves for the new color trends for the coming year. Sherwin Williams is one of my favorites that lead the way in predicting the popular paint colors we will be seeing. This forecast is crucial for fashion, interior design, and many other industries. As you can imagine color is applied to so many different everyday products. In this blog post, we will have an in-depth look at Sherwin Williams 2024 color trend, understand the inspiration behind these colors, and learn how to use them to bring character and beauty to our homes.

Sherwin Williams’ 2024 color trend is inspired by the Earth, art, and anthropology, and has an unique combination of modern and eclectic colors. These colors are intended to bring a sense of balance, calmness, and positivity to your homes. Sherwin Williams experts have predicted that the color trend for 2024 includes Blues & Greens, Red & Purples, Deeps & Darks and Delicate Tints.

The Deeps & Darks are warm earthy tones reflect the natural surroundings. They range from mossy golds to rich clay oranges, grays with green undertones, and navy. These all remind me of Arizona’s scape of the sand, rocks, and desert setting sky. I have seen the darker grays and blacks, blues and greens used most commonly and fearlessly selected in furniture and cabinetry. With the oranges, golds and browns I have seen more commonly in cushions, pillows or wallpaper. For the not so daring you can also consider easily removed pillow cases or blanket throws that can be rotated as an accent color.

Blues & Greens. You will find that these colors all can be found naturally. From the vast colors of the ocean, sky and lush greens from the jungle. Yet some of these tones come off eccentric yet feel like they have always been hidden in plain site. The deep moody greens represent a refreshing take on natural tones, like a mossy foggy green, billiard green, honeydew, and deep vouge greens. I have been seeing some jungle pattern themes emerging with large leafy motifs, birds of paradise or even exotic creatures. I don’t think animal print will ever go away but is still present in more neutral ways. Most of these patterns are seen in wallpapers and fabrics. These colors are perfect for adding depth and drama to any room, and are best used in conjunction with neutral tones for balance. Ways that I have incorporated greens into clients homes this year was with fabric(upholstery), rugs and cabinetry/wainscoting millwork.

Not to forget the blues, the color of the year is a light blue. It is breezy calming and could definitively take command of entire room with out feeling overwhelming. I think its popularity has risen due to the fact that it pairs so well with the last years and this years trending colors. More so like a buffer in-between the transitions of what’s to come. For example navy, forest green, honeydew green and any sort of greige paired together would all play nice together. 

Next on the list are reds and purples. Honestly this palette gives me maximalism design vibes. They are all very warm and understated colored neutrals paired with hues that are very saturated. There are several moody reds like crimson but play well with colors like clay. Salmons and lilacs mixed with dragon fruit. It kind sound like my childhood wardrobe when I say it out loud. Some of the hues do seem muted yet expressive which allows for individuals to feel like they are expressing themself without playing it safe. That also brings me to a point where I have seen a shift in my clientele giving themself permission to not ‘appeal to the buyer’ and live in the moment of their home for themselves by, picking a color for their authentic self and not the future buyer. The use of this palette is all over the board this year for use. I have used it in wall colors, fabric (upholstery and drapery) but, I would say is most commonly selected from a rug option.

Delicate Tints. These have all been around for quite some time and I have used just about everyone for a main wall color in homes or rooms. They are sophisticated, elevated and invite deeper thought to other aspects of the design in the space. Each color would also be best suited for a minimalistic design style or as paired sets for a sure fire trim and wall color combo.

Color trends are a great way to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to home décor and design. Whether you choose the warm earthy tones, deep moody greens, soft pastels, or dramatic blues grounded in neutrality, they will all work together to create a beautiful, cohesive space in your home. So why not give your home a refreshing and modern look? What color are you going to try this year?

Remember, preparing your space for the holidays is not just about the physical decorations; it’s about creating an atmosphere that captures the spirit of the season. With these tips, you’ll be well on your way to transforming your space into a holiday haven that will invite any one who enters.

Declutter and Organize: Before you start decorating, take some time to declutter and organize your space. Clear out any unnecessary clutter, make room for holiday decorations, and ensure that everything has its place. A clean and organized space will provide a fresh canvas for your holiday decor.

Deck the Halls: Nothing sets the holiday mood like festive decorations. Start by putting up a Christmas tree as the centerpiece of your space. This doesn’t always have to be a tree as well. As long as you are choosing one main focal point “hero” decor piece. Choose ornaments, lights, and garlands that match your personal style and color scheme. Don’t forget to adorn other areas of your home with wreaths, stockings, and other festive accents. This could be as simple as a few interchangeable pieces of framed art, accessories or changeable pillow cases.

Create a Warm Glow: Lighting plays a crucial role in creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Consider using warm LED string lights to add a soft glow to your space. This could be some twinkle lights on a stair railing or vent hood. Place candles strategically to create a warm and intimate ambiance this can also be electric candles if you prefer. Opt for scented candles in seasonal fragrances to enhance the sensory experience. Don’t forget one of our strongest links to fond memories is scent!

Add Seasonal Touches: Infuse your space with the spirit of the season by incorporating seasonal elements into your decor. Use pinecones, holly, and berries to create beautiful centerpieces or table settings. Swap out your regular throw pillows and blankets for ones with holiday-themed patterns or colors. Sticking with a themed color palette of your preference also creates a fresh new feel for your get togethers.

Set the Table: If you’re planning on hosting holiday dinners or parties, pay special attention to your dining area. Set the table with festive table linens, elegant dinnerware, and sparkling glassware. Add a centerpiece, such as a floral arrangement or a decorative holiday centerpiece, to create a visually stunning dining experience. Have fun and be creative with this. Just about anything can be a centerpiece if you pair it with other softer items to give it a fun interesting look.

Create a Cozy Nook: Designate a cozy corner in your space where you can relax and enjoy the holiday season. Arrange comfortable seating with plush cushions and warm blankets. Don’t forget to make sure there is somewhere for everyone to rest there booty even if it is just a pillow. Add a side table for a cups of hot cocoa or a good book also elevated the experience. Creating zones or areas for groups of people to hang out together and chat is always great thing to consider as well.

Considering the specific people that are using the space and who circulates in the space with them. When choosing cabinetry for your kitchen or bathroom you should also consider the available cabinet types and varying quality of construction. Ask what the actual box is made out of and what the thickness is. Also, what is the door made from. Is it MDF or real wood?

Each manufacture offers different types and qualities but, one thing in common is the four basic types of cabinets:

• Base. Standard base cabinets are 24 inches deep and 36 inches tall. Depth may be increased up to 27 inches on some semi-custom and custom applications. For ease of use, base cabinetry rests atop a four-inch recessed riser called a toe kick.
• Wall. Upper cabinetry is generally 12 inches deep but can be increased to 18 inches on some semi-custom and custom applications.
  Tall. Tall cabinets are typically 84-96” inches in height, serving as pantry space and broom storage.
• Specialty Units. Specialty units maximize square footage and organization efforts. They include corner cabinets, sink/cooktop fronts, suspended units, hutches, bottle racks and appliance garages or roll outs. An 18-inch backsplash creates usable workspace between countertops and the bottom edge of upper cabinets. The minimum height to the bottom of a hood by code should be 30”.

Drawers are something important to also consider. Stronger drawer glide technology has resulted in bigger drawers that can handle heavier items, up to about 100 pounds!

Drawers now store everything from utensils, cutlery and spices to bulkier items like pots, pans, dishware and chopping blocks. “It is not uncommon for there to be a large set of three-foot drawers near a stove for pots and pans these days,” says Alyssa Martin, an Interior Design Specialist based in Nokesville, VA.

Drawers may be kept simple without partitions or divided for easy organization. Drawer fronts typically are the style as the door front but can be a flush slab for a more custom look or ease of cleaning. Full overlay or inset doors are also considerations that upgrade a look. But, so many endless options are now available to suit your needs.

“One design trend we’ve leaned towards with cabinetry design is different color islands. People love mixing and matching stains and colors so they are not stuck with a bold color forever.” says Alyssa.

Solid hardwood has traditionally been the choice material for drawer box fronts and sides. Up until the last vicennial or so wood was harvested at a much older age and resulted in a more stable material. Solid wood joinery includes dovetail, finger, tongue-and-groove, dowel, biscuit and dado joints. “Dovetail construction is the best way to make a drawer. The construction won’t give up over time,” says Alyssa.

Today strong drawers can be commonly made from plywood, particleboard and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with joinery often doweled and glued together. Make sure the bottom of the drawers as well are a minimum of a 3/8” thickness as so they do not give out.

Budget Considerations

• Where to Splurge. Well-constructed drawers and solid wood doors and drawers are the indication of a high-quality cabinet. This helps determine the overall value of the cabinets. In the long run you will not have the drawer boxes fall apart or the doors swing off the hinges.
• Where to Save. Keeping the custom units to a minimum or making sure that each unit is a standard size or configuration. Also trying to make sure the installation isn’t too complicated so it doesn’t add too much extra labor. Go with a minimum ½” plywood box and an MDF door will help save as well. But, it is well worth getting a thicker plywood box and solid wood doors so they last for more than 15 years!

Ultimately, makes sure you are comfortable with your designer and or contractor. Making sure they are reflecting your personal style and suiting all your needs in your space. There are so many considerations like comfortable clearances, codes, and layouts. Make sure you consult a professional for the best result as it is going to be a big investment in your home.

It takes a lot of thought and time. Not only should you make sure you are spending your money in the right places but also have it done in a way that suites your lifestyle. Some serious things to think about when you are starting the process.

• How much longer will I live in this space or will I rent it?
• If I am reselling within 5 years is the material I’m putting in appeal to a large portion of the public?
• Am I overspending? Are these materials quality enough to last for my purpose? Or is this something that is worth it to me?

I can tell you right now if you intend to rent out your space in the near future it is not worth picking out the high-end materials. Things such as a fancy backsplash tile with a pretty sheen that cost 30$ a sq ft or the cabinet with the glaze finish and inset doors. Unfortunately, majority of renters will not care to be gentle or clean a space as you would yourself as an owner. Let’s be realistic unless something is yours that you worked for, most people will not see the value in taking care of it.

Now if you plan on letting it go and selling the space within 5 years or so. You do not have to be so careful about spending a few extra dollars here or there so you can get some luxurious enjoyment but within means. So go ahead get that double oven for thanksgiving dinners or the fancy backsplash. Just keep in mind if you go too funky or glitzy with some materials you might end up either having to replace it or limit yourself to certain corners of the market place.

You can figure that you shouldn’t spend over 15% of the value of your home on a kitchen remodel. If you do it’s because that extra cash attributes extra value to you. Whether it be enjoyment or convenience. You always have to weigh these things out. Also, something I always say to my clients what is it worth to you? Because I can easily design something 100K + but is a solid gold toilet or all custom cabinetry really necessary…?
